Setting up a VoIP Account with a VoIP Company

The development of broadband Internet access coupled with the flexibility and cheaper cost of calls using VoIP phone has made this new technology very attractive to prospective customers. Internet telephony is now one of the fastest growing applications on the Net with around four million VoIP users in the UK alone, not including business subscriptions.

The initial step that needs to be taken when looking into setting up an account is to look into the available VoIP providers and the range of services they offer. Once the provider and service have been selected the next stage is setting up your account. This is relatively straightforward but do keep in mind that you should check your service offers a local number. Some services don’t cover every phone exchange in which case you are likely to be offered a number from the nearest exchange thats available.

Having a non-local number may not seem like something to consider when VoIP is used for outgoing calls, it will be an issue to your family and friends when they make long distance (or national rate) calls to converse with you even though they may live in the same road. There are some VoIP providers that only offer non-geographic numbers, using codes such as 0870, 0845 or 056. In the case of non-geographic numbers some limitations exist: Calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers are excluded from most landline, mobile and VoIP providers’ all-inclusive call packages. In the case of 056 numbers, it is not possible to call them from outside the UK at present.

Consideration should be given to ensuring you have access to a landline as a backup. The reason for this is that if there is a blackout you are likely to lose your internet connection - because the router and ADSL modem need power - and your VoIP access too, because the VoIP equipment needs to be connected to the mains. There are some types of VoIP equipment that offer a “lifeline” function that will connect emergency calls, and all calls if there should be a power failure, to a landline. You should check this feature with your provider if you feel that you need to have this option included in your service.

Some VoIP service providers offer services that allow you to pay for calls as you go while others offer a service that charges a single, all-inclusive fee. Plans offering unlimited local and national calls are also available for small businesses and for residential users. In the case of businesses additional features such as a free fax service are often included. There is a plan out there to suit you!

Just contact the VoIP company of your choice and they will set up an account for you. The average person should be up and running with VoIP in about half an hour. Start saving money with VoIP today!

Surge in Mobile Broadband Traffic

The UK managing director at Carrier IQ, Simon Bransfield-Garth has sent out a dire warning of imminent problems for mobile networks. He claims that unless operators find ways to manage the excess traffic generated by dongles, the networks will have trouble on their hands. He warns that the data load on some of these mobile networks from dongles alone, far exceeds the combined network traffic from all other phone based services (including voice). Operators must think hard, and quickly come up with a solution or the upsurge on the mobile network traffic is headed for a disaster.

The concept of deliver all you can consume does not hold true here. The capacity of the network is by no means infinite. Unless investment is made to provide greater bandwidth via 3G broadband hotspots, we can expect significant congestion, which will render the mobile network, slow and unusable. With the increase in mobile broadband dongles, the network can no longer cope with the data traffic. The networks were initially designed for phones, and are now used by laptops. The rate at which a laptop can guzzle data far exceeds that used by a phone handset.

The sudden surge in mobile data impacts the way networks are managed, and also how the customer is charged for services. One solution is to increase tariffs to manage capacity, but this will suppress industry growth. An alternative will be to use a more sensible pricing plan. By studying the users’ habit, tariffs can be adjusted to match the needs of different customer groups. It does the network a lot of damage, to just offer services with unnecessary data download limits. Operators must embark on using intelligent network monitoring and anonymous device level monitoring, to streamline the services offered.

What Direction Are Gaming Notebooks Headed In

Notebooks seem to be the current popular thing this year. I am concerned that like last year we will have delays getting our hands on the latest technology too. Laptop Computers have been a growing industry year on year for a number of years now and it look set to be that way. Companies are trying to structure the technology cycles but that doesn’t prevent anyone from arriving and advancing things.

There seems to be a lot more selection and availability of gaming laptops these days. Also with the growing competiton and fast paced technology shifts, portables don’t hold their price for too long. The performance of gaming laptops has greatly improved and its really a viable means of gaming. Speed to one side, also worthy of a mention is the radically sleek case designs we are seeing these days. Gaming speed between notebooks and desktops should always be in favour of desktops though, clearly because desktops are always going to be bigger and more powerful. I do not give it too long before we see ultra light gaming laptops on the shelves.

Despite the fact that the market share is controlled by brands marketing via retail outlets I think the direct model and custom built laptops will always be around. Sometimes with larger brands the quality of the main components is not upto scratch. By being able to take away some extras from the spec you can truly save cash on parts you don’t intend to use. If you will be doing greater amounts of intensive activities on your laptop then those prebuilt systems will most likely not give all the functionality and speed you require. Custom built laptops cater for everybody regardless of their precise needs. You can hunt down of manufacturers who sell direct so there are a lot of alternatives too. Once again an additional point to custom notebooks.

The upcoming mobile technology will be amazing. Except from what has already been mentioned UMPC’s are another massive sector seeing a rise this year. Clearly this will be something huge in up and coming markets. I would like to see a larger version of these low cost ultra mobiles. I think it could be a massive success. If we overlook processing speed I’m sure we would witness those variants of laptops today. We are seeing thinner gaming laptops now and it seems this will keep on going. I really don’t know what to expect aside from those concepts spoken of. Some Manufacturer is designing a product to be unique in a crowed market.

High Performance Laptops Dropping In Price As New Tech Is On The Way

There are two types of expensive laptop. On one end you have the big, beefy gaming laptops and on the other you have the razor thin ultra portables which are ridiculously expensive. Both come at price premiums. Gaming laptops seem to be more practical for day to day use if you’re replacing a desktop pc and the umpc’s are the best choice if you are syncing the data with your desktop at home. However the market for ultra mobiles is rather small and the most popular laptop screen size is 15.4 inch. A new trend seems to be the budget umpc’s laptops that are 10 inch or smaller, low powered and only suitable for a number of common applications. If I had to choose just one the gaming laptop will always win as the majority of people who require mobility can still be mobile with the average 15.4 inch size.

The video processor is one of the most crucial things to consider when buying a gaming laptop. Two options are available in this area. Nvidia and ATI are the only 2 companies to choose from. Since AMD purchased ATi things have rather slowed down for the graphics company where as the competitor Nvidia has been jumping ahead without any restriction of bigger plans in place, only thinking about releasing the fastest laptop graphics chips as rapidly as they can. This technology seems to be changing every single year and Nvidia seem to have the edge.

The processor, memory and video card are things to pay attention to when you are buying gaming laptops. The processor should be a dual core processor like the intel core duo or amd turion x2 with a clock speed of over 2GHz as the minimum. Minimum requirements for ram are 2GB if running Windows Vista but 3GB is recommended for the best performance. To play games you need to have a dedicated viedo card. Usually you get 256MB dedicated graphics ram. A mid to high spec video card should play all current and future games without any lag. Nothing but the most powerful cards will do for extreme gamers.

When looking to purchase laptops, whether they are for gaming or any other purpose where is the best place to buy? The established companies would prefer you buy via retail as it makes their products more valuable however there are discount online retailers opening up all over the place and with their low operating costs they are offering really good prices. In the case of gaming laptops too, for the most choice online seems to be the best place to look as you just won’t find the same variety of these products in your local computer shop.

Can Linux and Windows XP be Installed on One Hard Disk?

If you have used Windows based operating systems that is installed in your computer, you may not have used Linux.
Linux is another operating system that you can install on your home computer.

If you are interested in learning Linux, there are different ways. You can get books and read them, you can get a telnet shell account to run some commands, you can take classes, or you can install it on your own home computer.

I tried all of them, and I found out the best way to learn Linux is install it on you home computer, get a Linux book, and learn it by doing it following the books and trying to run commands on your own.

Suppose you decide to learn Linux and want to install it on you own home computer. The question that most people ask is: What do I do with the Windows operating system that is already installed on your computer.

Most computer users who want to learn Linux are already using Windows XP, Win 2000, or other operating systems.

The most common questions is:

Do I have to get rid of Windows operating system to install Linux?

Do I need another computer to install Linux on it, if I need to keep Windows running on my existing computer?

The answer to the above two question is NO. You don’t need to get rid of Windows operating system, and you don’t need to buy another computer.

There is method you can use to install Windows and Linux on the same computer, and on the same Hard disk.

The method can be achieved by an average computer user, who can follow the step by step guide that has the instructions needed for the task. This is what I did myself.

I followed the necessary steps to install Windows XP and Linux,
I applied each step in order, and ended up with computer that has two operating systems on the same hard disk.

The guide I followed is called the dual boot guide, that I created myself after figuring out an easy way to install Windows XP and RedHat Linux on the same computer.

In summary, Windows XP users can learn Linux without loosing their Windows XP operating system. Also, you don’t have to buy any new hardware.
