Let Us Take a Quick Look at Some of the Metals Used in Producing Cookware

Let us take a quick look at some of the metals used in producing cookware. There are non-metallic materials used (especially for microwave use), such as ceramics, glass and silicone

Aluminium is one of the most popular forms of metal found in cookware. Not only does it conduct heat exceptionally well, but it doesn’t corrode or rust. Some chefs have complained that it reacts with foods that are highly acidic, thus changing their flavour, but the anodised aluminium found in today’s cookware combats this problem. The largest sellers of aluminium cookware include Scanpan, Swiss Diamond, Woll and GreenPan.

Heat resistance is carbon steel’s main asset. Low conductivity is an advantage with woks and paella pans, where it helps to keep part of the pan at a different temperature from the rest, but would be a disadvantage elsewhere.

Cast iron has many fundamental flaws, but an even greater number of attributes that makes it one of the most popular types of cookware on the market. It’s heavy, is known to rust and heats slowly. On the other hand, it heats evenly, is durable and can withstand high temperatures. This makes it ideal for construction of French ovens, terrines, tagines and a variety of camping cookware. Most family winter favourites are cooked best in cast iron cookware, from leading manufacturers Le Chasseur, Le Creuset, Lodge Cast Iron and Staub.

Copper is the preferred choice for many of today’s best chefs. Not only is copper an outstanding conductor of heat, but it is not as heavy as cast iron. Hot spots rarely occur with copper, and a change in temperature on a stove top is immediately transferred to copper cookware. The results? Superior braising and browning of foods. The downside to copper, however, is it is easily the most expensive type of cookware available and copper is highly reactive with foods. To combat this, manufacturers of leading copper cookware including Scanpan and Jamie Oliver use a copper-based alloy in many of its highest selling ranges of cookware. Scanpan Coppernox is an industry leader in this particular type of cookware.

The term stainless steel is often used to incorrectly describe cookware that many believe will not rust for the life of the cookware. The term literally means that it will stain less, but it is not rust proof. At any rate, this iron alloy contains at least 11.5% chromium. In addition to its namesake property, it doesn’t react to either alkaline or acidic foods and it’s pretty resistant to dents and scratches. Not a great conductor itself, this cookware generally has a disk of copper or aluminium in the base. Chef Inox make big use of stainless in its productsso it should come as no surprise to know that inox is a synonym for stainless steel. Scanpan and Essteele Australia (again, there’s a hint in the name) are another two brands that come to mind immediately, but most of them out there are using the material to some degree.

7 Questions You Must Ask Yourself Before Buying a Digital Camcorder

There’s never been a better time to buy a digital video camera. Prices are lower than ever, the camcorders are packed with features, and editing software is cheap and easy to use.

Unfortunately, there’s also never been a more confusing time to buy a digital video camera. There are so many different formats competing for your money, it’s almost impossible to know which one to go for. Should you buy a Mini DV camcorder, or a DVD camcorder? What about solid state (flash memory), or hard disk? And is now the time to bite the bullet and buy a high definition video camera?

Confusion reigns, and it’s not helped by manufacturers releasing new models with improved features and lower prices every few months.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to reduce the confusion and give yourself a clear idea of which type of video camera is the best for you.

Below are seven questions you should ask yourself before you studio a single feature list or read a single review.

• What do I want to use the camcorder for?
• Will I be mostly using it indoors or outdoors?
• Do I want to edit the footage I shoot?
• Do I want the camcorder to be a stills camera too?
• How important is the quality of the video I shoot?
• Is audio quality important?
• Will I use a tripod with the camcorder?

The answers to these questions will influence which type and model of camcorder you buy. For example, if you want to be able to edit your video footage on a PC or Mac, you should choose a Mini DV camcorder. And if you are likely to use a tripod, you should choose a camcorder which loads its media from the side or top, rather than one which loads from the bottom.

By answering these questions and learning what the jargon that manufacturers are so fond of means, you can make sure that when you come to buy your camcorder, its exactly what you want and not a costly mistake.

Robert Armstrong is the publisher of ‘How to Buy a Digital Camcorder’ a seven part email course which takes you step-by-step through the process of deciding which type of camcorder is best for you. It includes a jargon buster, a guide to seeing through the marketing hype, and is available now for $19.95.

Tablecloths - Use them in the Home

Many people question what kind of tablecloths are best suited for use in their home. With such a variety of styles, shapes and fabrics to choose from it may seem difficult to determine what is right for your decor. Here are a few suggestions that may assist you.

You will not have trouble finding the ideal tablecloths for the kitchen, dining room or outside living area because tablecloths are for sale in several shapes: rectangle, oval, round and square. Plus, each shape comes in numerous different sizes, so be careful to take the measurement of your table prior to buying your tablecloths. For instance, a round tablecloth can measure anywhere from 70″ to 132″ depending on the size of your table and the amount of fabric you’d like hanging from the top of the table. If you want an unusual shape, consider ordering made-to-order tablecloths.

Tablecloths can be found in an assortment of colors and fabrics sure to fit any decor. They make instantly changing the appearance of any room both simple and inexpensive. Tablecloths are there not just for the aesthetics of your table. They also protect delicate wood surfaces from scrapes and if you have a table top that has been damaged or shows imperfections then tablecloths can be used to hide these unsightly areas.

Think about where you will be using your tablecloths before buying them. If you have an eat-in kitchen where you plan to use tablecloths everyday then consider a laminate fabric. Laminate tablecloths can be easily wiped clean and several kinds can even be washed. The tablecloth in a formal dining room tends to be more of a decoration and does not get used real frequently. A tablecloth produced from a woven damask print is a perfect pick in this case. The damask print has a textured appearance that has a rich look and a soil resistant finish for when you do use it. If you frequently dine on an outdoor porch or terrace then vinyl tablecloths are a great option for you. Be certain the tablecloths feature a hole in the middle and you can use them with the table’s umbrella on sunny days.

Since tablecloths possess the ability to change a room instantly, you will find your creative juices flowing when you begin shopping for them. You can impart pizzaz to an eating area with even basic spun polyester tablecloths, if they match the motif of the room. With so many options to choose from, shopping for tablecloths is sure to be fun!

How to Use Chair Covers for Your Special Function

An ideal way to transform drab chairs into more fashionable ones is by using chair covers. It’s easy to find one that perfectly fits your chairs because chair covers are sold in so many different styles, colors and fabrics.

Chair covers are most commonly known for their use at weddings and corporate functions. A majority of the facilities that host big functions have banquet stacking chairs or folding chairs made from wood, metal or plastic. You can personalize an event by disguising ordinary chairs with chair covers.

When it comes to the wedding reception, chair covers could be used by the bride-to-be to establish the tone of the event. A good example would be the use of spun polyester chair covers. Spun polyester is sold in a wide assortment of colors making it simple for you to create a wedding reception based on a specific color theme. Are you looking to establish a more romantic tone to your wedding? Opt for satin chair covers or a fanciful fabric such as monique, twinkle, contessa or pintuck. By all means, don’t forget the table decorations. Create a wedding reception not to be forgotten by using coordinating table skirting, tablecloths and table napkins.

If you own a business that offers rental space for large gatherings then you should have a supply of chair covers available for use. By providing something that a competitor does not, you’ll be able to give yourself an advantage. Stock woven polyester chair covers in ivory or white and you will be able to complement virtually any party theme. Encourage your patrons to purchase or even rent color coordinated sashes, bagels or elastic chair bows and they’ll be able to add their own personal touch to the occasion.

Chair covers provide a finished look to any event. With such a variety complementary materials and colors to select from, one can create a genuinely unique look. Say good-bye to the cold, hard look of banquet or folding chairs by using chair covers for your future events.

Home Entertainment Theater Decorating

Now that technology has made having an in-home entertainment system a reality, how do you go about incorporating one into your own home? Creating a home theater involves more than just choosing a system, you’ve got to design a space that will provide the best viewing experience.

First decision: location. To create a true “theater” experience, you’ll want to have as little interruption from outside light as possible. For that reason, many people use a basement or an attic room for their home theater. If you don’t have an attic or basement, choose a room with the fewest or smallest windows. Covering the windows with both pull-down shades and heavy, dark-colored curtains will best darken the room for optimal viewing during the daytime. Check with home-improvement stores and window showrooms for special “black-out” curtains and shades.

You might think that wall color isn’t a big issue in your home theater-since the lights will usually be off. However, you should give wall and floor treatments some consideration so that they don’t distract during show time. For example, you’ll want to use dark, deep colors such as brown, deep red or charcoal gray to keep the walls in the background while a movie is playing. Textured wall covering or matte finish paint will keep walls from “shining” with screen light reflection.

Although the lights will usually be off in your home entertainment room, you’ll need a good lighting source for entering and leaving the room. It’s best to avoid overhead lights as they can be too glaring. Sconces that produce soft light on walls and recessed lighting are the best choices for this room. Use dimmers to control the lighting so that you can adjust the brightness to keep viewers’ eyes comfortable.

The kind of seating you choose for your home entertainment theater depends on the kind of crowd you expect to entertain. Will your young children and their friends be the heaviest users? If so, a couple of large sofas will work well. Kids tend to fight over individual seats, but they can all pile on a sturdy sofa. An added benefit to a comfy couch is the opportunity for one or two people to simply sprawl over it for more private viewing. Recliners and loveseats offer a comfortable seat for teens and adults. In fact, why not put a number of recliners in the room, so everyone can have the most comfortable seat in the house? If multiple recliners are not in your budget, easy chair/ottoman sets work just as well, if not better. In a pinch, the ottoman serves as extra seating.

The finishing touches in decorating your home entertainment theater are the most practical ones. A solid level surface, such as a wooden table or T.V. tray, within reach of each seating area makes it easy for viewers to set down snacks or drinks. To avoid having to leave the room to replenish snacks, keep a mini refrigerator in the room, and use cupboards or existing closet shelves for dry snacks. A small microwave oven will let you make popcorn and heat up nachos without ever leaving your home entertainment haven.

Innovation Management - Isolating Problems and Implementing Solutions

Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation.

There are other useful definitions in this field, for example, creativity can be defined as consisting of a number of ideas, a number of diverse ideas and a number of novel ideas.

There are distinct processes that enhance problem identification and idea generation and, similarly, distinct processes that enhance idea selection, development and commercialisation. Whilst there is no sure fire route to commercial success, these processes improve the probability that good ideas will be generated and selected and that investment in developing and commercialising those ideas will not be wasted.

Isolating problems and implementing solutions

The five stages above are separate and distinct, yet there is sometimes a feeling that there is more of an overlap than in fact there is:

a) Problem identification is just that. But it requires a wide variety of individuals to make good decisions. For example, end-users see problems differently from sales, who see problems differently from technicians and designers, who in turn see problems differently from sales and marketing, who see problems differently from finance and strategists, who see problems differently from warehouse managers etc.

b) Idea generation is also self-explanatory, but requires a wide range of diverse and novel people to truly arrive at good ideas. And then leaders have t be aware of organisational culture, structure, team structures and much more to optimise idea-generating sessions.

c) Idea selection, as above requires the a wide range of diverse and novel people and a good understanding of evaluation procedures, as this si really the first filter until this batch of ideas moves into development.

d) Development is often confused with the last stage, but is separate. It is where the ideas that will become development programmes are chosen. The Economist (2003b) states that 3000 bright ideas are needed for 100 worthwhile projects, which in turn will be winnowed down to four development programmes for new products. And four such development programmes are the minimum needed to stand any chance of getting one winner.

e) Commercialisation is the final stage. It includes marketing strategy, design, pricing strategies and so forth.

A Buyer’s Guide to Regular Tube TVs

Traditional CRT television screens have a number of important advantages over the newer technologies, not only in terms of the cost to buy them but in the ongoing costs of ownership as well. For instance, while a replacement light source for a DLP TV can cost as much as $500, an entire traditional tube television can be purchased for far less than the cost of that replacement bulb.

In fact it is the price that is the major selling point, and major advantage, of the traditional CRT TV. The prices of all televisions have been falling, but perhaps none have fallen quite so far and so fast as the prices for these traditional tube televisions. The smallest traditional tube televisions, those of 13″ and less, can often be purchased for less than $100, and even the traditional 25″ and 27″ television models often retail for less than $300. In addition, many traditional tube televisions come with features like built in VCRs, built in DVD players and the like, making them even more versatile and useful.

Even the largest regular tube televisions retail for far less than LCD, plasma and DLP rear projection models. While the price of a 36″ traditional tube television may still be over $1,500, the cost of a comparable size LCD or plasma television would be thousands more. Of course it is important to shop around, but in general none but the largest and most feature laden traditional tube televisions will set you back more than about $2,000.

In addition, traditional tube televisions offer true out of the box performance, making them a great choice for those who do not want to go through the hassle of setting up all the accessories that come with the newer technologies. In most cases all the buyer needs to do when purchasing a new CRT TV is to take it out of the box, hook up the cable TV, satellite TV or antenna signal, turn it on and use the remote control to find the channels. It doesn’t get much easier than that, and that may be one of the reasons why these televisions continue to command such a large share of the market even after the advent of all those great new television technologies.

What to Look for in a Traditional Tube Television

When shopping for a new traditional tube television, whether as a replacement for an existing TV or for an additional room, it is important to look for the right features and benefits in that TV. One of the most important considerations is the inputs on the unit. The newest traditional tube televisions come equipped with a number of different inputs, not only for cable, satellite and antenna signals, but for computer inputs as well. It is important to look for the presence of a VGA connection, a DVI connection, or preferably both, as these connections will allow you to hook up a computer to the TV display.

Other common inputs on a traditional tube television include inputs for DVD players, VCRs, Laser Disc players and video games. If these inputs are an important consideration it is a good idea to go shopping with that in mind.

The Importance of the Right Cabling

One vital part of the television viewing experience that many television shoppers overlook is the importance of the type of cabling that is used to connect all that great equipment to the television screen itself. Buying cheap generic cables may save you a little money up front, but the lack of quality will be readily apparent to everyone who watches the TV. It is far better to spend a little bit more and to purchase the best cables you can afford. Buying the right cables is one of the best ways to get the most value for your money.

Speaking of value for your money, it is important to shop around as much as possible, whether you are shopping for a traditional tube television, a plasma screen TV, an LCD TV, a DLP TV or any other type of television technology. These days TVs are sold virtually everywhere, from the deepest discount retailers to the most high end specialty stores and electronics retailers. In addition, televisions of all kinds are sold on the internet as well, so shopping online is always a good idea.

When it comes to choosing a brand, there are certainly no shortage of choices. Virtually every electronics manufacturer in the world, from American firms and European manufacturers to all the Asian suppliers, have at least a few models of traditional tube televisions on the market, so shopping around among brands should not be a problem either. Some of the many manufacturers who make a variety of traditional tube televisions include such well known brands as Toshiba, Sharp, Samsung, Sony, Daewoo, Sylvania, RCA, Magnavox and Phillips, among others.

When shopping for a new television, whether it is a traditional tube television or one of the newer technologies on the market, it is important to look for the newest features and benefits in order to get the most value for your money. It is a good idea, for instance, to look for a television that is HDTV (high definition television) and DTV (digital television) ready, as this will ensure the TV can be used far into the future. One of the many benefits of a traditional tube television is its longevity, and buying an HDTV and DTV ready model will ensure that the TV remains usable no matter what changes may come in the future.

It is also a good idea to choose a traditional tube television with a flat picture tube. This flat screen technology helps to reduce glare and make for a more pleasant viewing experience. These flat picture tube TVs provide many of the same benefits as the more expensive flat screen LCD and plasma TVs, at a fraction of the price.
