A Martial Artist’s View of The Film: “Dead Man”

The first time I saw “Dead Man” was by sheer accident. I was channel surfing as it came on.

The fact that it stars Johnny Depp in the title role, made it promising, and he’s very good in the film.

The first sequence shows him as a passenger on a train, arguably the best-dressed, or at least the most formal. As the journey continues, the passengers change from being family types to gritty frontiersmen, who take a second or two to raise the windows and shoot at stampeding buffalo.

Depp is headed toward Machine, the end of the line; a one-company town, where he has been offered a job at the foundry as an accountant. Upon arrival, he learns from a crusty toady and even from the gun wielding boss himself, played menacingly enough by Robert Michum, that he’s too late.

The post was given to someone else, a month before. It seems his invitation, at this point is two months old. (Depp had to bury his parents before leaving Cleveland, that’s all we’re told.)

Retiring to the saloon, where his small change will only buy him a pint of whiskey, Depp meets a local flower girl who sells paper creations; the implication being that nothing as delicate as real flowers can take root in muddy, grimy Machine.

She invites Depp back to her room; they’re discovered by her errant beau, whom she insults, and he plugs her with a bullet as she throws herself in front of Depp, either to save him or because she’s ready to move on.

Depp returns fire, felling her boyfriend, played by a twitchy Gabriel Byrne. Then, Depp notices that Byrne’s bullet passed through the girl and entered his slowly bleeding chest, where it is now lodged perilously near his heart.

Depp flees on Byrne’s pinto. Every lowlife in the west is lured into hunting for Depp based on a $500 reward offered by Mitchum. We’re told Byrne was Mitchum’s boy, and Mitchum is pissed about that loss, but perhaps even more incensed about losing his prized pinto

An unconscious Depp is found and nursed by a Native American who has people call him, Nobody.

Nobody treats Depp as if he’s already dead, speaking to him about the spirit world, and taking Depp deep into Native country to find a proper send-off into the world beyond.

The key question that the film raises for the martial artist is: “What kind of life do we live when we consider ourselves already dead?”

And, is it helpful to think of ourselves as dead, though we’re still breathing and eating and functioning in this world?

Arguably, to be a martial artist, you need to accept and to confront the inevitability of death, which can happen on the mat, through a simple mistake, or out on the street, at the hands of a foe.

Theoretically, when you know you’re dying, or think of yourself as already dead, you can let go of holding back.

Depp’s transformation is worth seeing, and this movie adds yet another interesting view of what the Wild West was about.

The History of Pilates - It All Began With One Sickly Child

A look into the history of Pilates helps you understand the tremendous power that this form of exercise has to help strengthen and transform your body. Unlike yoga, which has a tradition that goes back thousands of years, one individual developed the Pilates Method at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 1880 in Dusseldorf, Germany, a sickly baby named Joseph Pilates was born. As a young child he watched as his friends ran, jumped and played games -activities that he could not do because of his frail, weak body. That is when the Pilates Method really began. Pilates was determined to find a way to improve his health and physical strength and stamina. He set off on a lifelong quest for fitness and exercise. Pilates not only overcame his physical frailties - he mastered them. He became an accomplished yogi, boxer, gymnast, and skier.

During World War I, Pilates was interned in England where he worked as a nurse with injured war victims. Pilates was convinced that exercise could help rehabilitate their badly damaged bodies. Many of these patients were not able to move, but that did nothing to deter Pilates’ determination to help them gain strength and mobility. He rigged up their hospital beds with straps and springs and created a series of exercises to help move their joints through a greater range of motion. The exercises also helped his patients develop muscle strength, flexibility and endurance. Eventually, many of these people were able to get up and move around by themselves.

In 1923, Joseph Pilates and his wife moved to New York City where they opened up a studio and began working to rehabilitate injured dancers. Some of the most famous dancers that they worked with were George Balanchine and Martha Graham. Word of the dramatic results that came from using the Pilates method spread, and soon it became the exercise of choice for not only dancers, but also entertainment stars and professional athletes. For a long time, this unique form of exercise was limited to this elite community.

That has all changed. Now millions of people are familiar with the Pilates method of exercise. They have discovered for themselves that Pilates can help them gain the strength, flexibility, and balance of a professional dancer, without having to spend hours at the gym. They spend less time to achieve better results. No wonder it has become one of the hottest fitness trends to come along in years.

Now that you know the background of Pilates and why it was developed, you can realize how this powerful form of exercise can help you gain strength, flexibility, endurance, and the body of that you’ve always wanted.

Monte Bianco Augments in Volume since 2001 as Reported by Glaciologists

Recent elaborate Global Positioning System measurements acquired on the 17-18th Oct have depicted that Monte Bianco numbers 4810.3 metres. Mont Blanc is veiled by a thick icecap which has got bigger by 2 m in just 2 years moreover more suprisingly the amount of the snow and ice has virtually grown twofold . Least ways that’s according to the experts.

The bulk of ice and snow was measured for the first time in 2001. It was calculated at 14300 metres cubed above 4760 metres. It comprised only 13700 cubic metres in 2001 potentially due to the heat with + temperatures as high as 4950 m height. Nonetheless the ice has almost doubled since then and now numbers 21000 metres cubed.

Chamonix village’s valued local weather forecaster Lauren Dudek explained the increment in the scale of the ice cap is one of the counter intuitive consequences of climate change: The amount of snow hasn’t accumulated generally in the French Alps only with global warming we’re having added hotter westerly air currents which bestow rainfall at lower altitudes however during summer this translates to heavy snow that settles higher up than 3600 metres height thus the amount of the ice cap is rising. Contrast that to the situation during winter where snow crystals are exceedingly cold and are carried by the wind and so don’t rest on the summit.

Chamonix Haute Savoie France is not only famous for Mont Blanc it is also a world renowned ski area and alpinism mecca with lot’s of ski deals and self catering chalets to be hired. Furthermore at just 1 hr from Geneva airport it is perfect for a short break.

Life Insurers Use The Body Mass Index To Tighten The Belt On Fat People

Overweight people are in the firing line again. Life insurance companies are increasing premiums up to four fold for fat people. They’ve always charged more for those of us who over-eat, but during the last year the penalties have got worse.

In moves to tighten the belts further, the life insurers are lowering the weight limits they use to categorise people. This tougher move means that those who are merely overweight and would have previously qualified for a standard premium, are now penalised with higher premiums - and the premium rapidly rises the more overweight they believe you are.

Height and weight are just two of the questions you have to answer when you apply for life insurance. From them, the life company calculates your Body Mass Index and if that exceeds the limits they define as acceptable, they might ask for a doctor’s report. In bigger cases they might ask you to have a medical examination. If this confirms that your weight is of concern, then you can expect your premium to be loaded by at least 50% and as much as 400% if you’re really obese. Recent research shows that around 25% of applicants will experience problems getting life cover due to their weight. In extreme cases the insurer will even refuse the application.

In an acknowledgement of normal middle age spread, the insurance companies do take your age into account when deciding your premium. They accept that people naturally tend to put weight on as they age. If you’re young and overweight, however, they’ll certainly hit you hard. So overweight and 38 will be hit much harder than overweight and 58.

For example, a non smoking healthy man aged 35 asking for £150,000 level cover over 25 years will currently be quoted £18.77 by Scottish Provident but this could easily jump to £35 if he is overweight and up to £47 if he’s obese.

And obesity is certainly a growing problem. Over the last 20 years obesity in adults has rocketed with more than 60% of men and 50% of women being judged as overweight or obese. And signs are that the problem won’t improve. In children aged between 2 and 15, 28% of girls and 22% of boys are overweight.

How do you rate on the Body Mass Index?

Calculate your own BMI.

Note your weight in pounds and multiply it by 703.

Divide the result by your height measured in inches

Again divide the resulting number by your height in inches

The result is your BMI

The typical insurance company considers a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 to as normal. Above 25 classifies you as overweight. Over 30 and you’re obese.

To give you more of a fix on what this means for you, here are the BMI’s for twelve famous people:

Under weight

Paula Radcliffe - Marathon Runner - 18.0

Victoria Beckham - Footballers Wife - 17.0

Jennifer Aniston - Actress - 17.5

Normal weight

Alan Shearer - Newcastle Footballer - 24.4

Davina McCall - TV Presenter - 20.8

Cilla Black - Presenter - 20.7

Overweight

Russell Crowe - Hollywood Actor - 25.6

Ann Widdecombe - MP - 25.1

Charlie Dimmock - Gardening Presenter - 26.0

Obese

Norman Schwarzkopf - US General - 30.5

Michelle McManus - Presenter - 34.4

Dawn French - Comedienne - 43.8

Why do you need dental insurance?

With you being able to insure just about anything now, you may view dental insurance as a way for greedy companies to take yet more money out of your pockets for something you do not really need.

However, you are wrong. We all know how dentistry costs can mount up - even a routine check up can easily cost you £40 - and that is without you actually having any treatments done.

Also, good dental health is not only important for our appearance, it is important for our overall health too as problems in the mouth can often be a sign that something else needs looking at health-wise - even if it just your diet.

A good dental insurance policy can help cover the costs of dental treatment whether it be an emergency or a routine check up, meaning you never have to worry about the cost of keeping your mouth, teeth and gums healthy.

So, who provides dental insurance?

Many healthcare cash plan providers offer cover for dentistry fees - up to a set limit - within their policies. And now there are also a select number of companies who offer standalone dental insurance.

The cover offered by the insurers vary, but depending who take you take a policy out with and whether it is part of a cash plan or a standalone dental insurance policy, you can get cover that will pay for routine treatment, dental emergencies and accidental dental injuries.

Currently one insurer provides cover for serious dental problems such as reconstructive surgery including plastic surgery following a dental injury or oral cancer.

Where to buy

As with all insurances, the key to getting the best cover at a price to suit your budget is by shopping around. The internet has a wealth of dental insurers and policies on offer so you can take your time in comparing the policy terms and conditions - and its benefits - on a like for like basis.

That way you can ensure you get the level of cover you need to keep your mouth - and your overall health and appearance - healthy, at a price that suits your circumstances.

Gold Chains: Lingo and Facts

All that glitters are not gold chains, so spend some time doing your research when you decide to purchase a chain for yourself. Lots of chains on the market are gold plated or simply gold painted. They look good at first but later on the gold wears down and the metal (usually, copper, nickel or zinc) underneath shows through.

Real gold chains are a little pricey ranging from one hundred to one thousand dollars, but gold lasts forever and doesn’t tarnish so the expense is well worth it. They can be worn by men or women and make a simple yet elegant statement.

Several types of gold chain are available to purchase. There’s the bead which is made of little pieces of gold beads. The curb is the type of gold chain most often shown in ads, with a series of interlocking, oblong, beveled rings. The Figaro is like the curb except that every three links or so the ring is twice as long as the others.

Solid Cable chains look like thick twisted anchor cable, whereas the rope chain looks like well, rope. Snake chains are kind of cool because the links are stacked close together and manage to resemble snake skin. Other types of chain are Popcorn, Singapore, San Marco, Mesh, Omega, Box, Cable and Byzantine.

To reduce cost and weight in larger types of gold chains such as the Woven or Mesh styles the each of the links in the chain are hollow. When the gold chains are referred to as solid chains it simply indicates that the links aren’t hollow, not that they are composed of pure gold. Nearly all gold is mixed with another metal like silver or copper because its very soft and will dent easily.

Informed jewelry shoppers feel more confident in their purchases. As a result, they make smarter buying decisions.

Safe Workouts Begin with a Good Warm-Up

It is starting to become warmer, and many people will be returning to their fitness routines. Most sports injuries that happen when a person works out are caused due to a lack of proper warm up and stretching of the muscles before a workout.

It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is definitely the case when you start to workout or do your fitness routine. Sore muscles, sprains, and even broken bones can result from not warming up your body prior to conditioning.

The best medicine for saving yourself the agony of ‘the morning after syndrome’ is to properly stretch out before your workout and then to warm up by doing some light jogging. You can use an ipod and listen to music, or take a friend with you for company.

Start by doing a simple stretching exercise. First, stand with your feet shoulder length apart. Reach down as far as you can with both hands and try to touch the floor. Don’t jerk, but simply extend your arms to the floor slowly and hold that position until you feel slight pressure on your leg and back muscles. Repeat this 5 times.

Next, sit on a mat or semi-soft surface. Put both of your feet directly in front of you and together. Extend your hands slowly and touch the tips of your shoes if you can. If you can’t quite reach that far don’t worry, this is the reason you are doing the stretching exercises in the first place. Your body needs to expand the ligaments and muscles to allow for the pressure of the upcoming workout. Repeat this stretching exercise up to 10 times.

These two stretching exercises will get you ready for moving around and working out as well as start the process of blood flow in your body.

If you plan to run for your workout it is suggested that you stretch your legs and hamstrings ( back of the upper leg ). To do this you extend one foot in front of the other far enough so most of your weight is on the front foot. Then slowly shift the rest of your weight forward while placing both hands on your knee. Hold this position for about 5 seconds after you feel a tightening pressure on your back and legs. Do this 10 times slowly for each leg.

It is wise to take your time when stretching out. The better job you do of loosening up when you stretch, the less likelihood of any sports injury occurring.

Another easy way to stretch your whole body is to do about 30 ‘jumping jacks’. This is merely jumping and spreading your feet apart at the same time you raise your hands just like you were going to clap your hands above your head. This is an enjoyable exercise, and one that lends itself easily to music. This is a standard exercise that is good in itself as it increases your blood flow and heartbeat. You may find that you want to do more that 30 jumping jacks at a time. Just remember to start slow if you are a beginner.

Now that you have stretched out your legs and loosened up a bit, take a slow jog for about 3 or 4 minutes. Then you will be ready to do a nice workout without fear of pulling any muscles.

Stretching and warming up will prevent sore muscles the day after your workout when you do it regularly. And it will reduce the incidence of sports injuries such as torn muscles. Just remember a great workout always begins with a solid warm up routine every time.

Political Online Forum Debates

Many people get online and get sucked into political forum debates, where one side rails against another. Then the name calling starts and degradation spirals out of control from there. Eventually people no longer use their real name or identity and then they are suddenly emboldened by the anonymity to say things they would never in a million years say in public.

The sound and fury is fun to participate in, yet having been involved in these things and then finding out I am debating with an anonymous poster who resorts to name calling is not so much fun. Indeed one has to ask them selves; are you sure you wish to beat your head against the wall, with others who disagree with you? I have noticed attacks on my personal and actual observations when the other debaters have failed to observe themselves and then basically spout party-line politics for issues they no nothing about.

Politics are more of a hobby for me, just something fun to think on, I never get too worked up over any of it. People just do not know what I know and have not seen all I have seen, so I understand that. And trying to convince someone with a closed mind of anything is a wasteful activity. You may find yourself in such debate online and you will remember what I have said. We must all agree that there are important issues we MUST address as a Nation because our security and on-going efforts to maintain our civilization and better it are at stake. There are serious topics we can all discuss online and we have come to far to throw it all away or backtrack now. Consider this in 2006.

Critical Illness Cover - Children welcome

Lots of adults now have critical illness insurance, but what about the children?

If you were unfortunate enough for your child to develop a critical illness it is very likely that you would need considerable time off work and probably a great deal of extra help too. If there are other children in the family, there will no doubt be child care costs to consider whilst you’re attending to a very sick child.

Insurance cover for children can start as early as 3 months of age with some insurance companies, although you may have to wait until the child is three before cover starts with others. Fortunately, with most policies, it’s standard practice to include your children, but you need to check on this to make sure. It is possible that your insurer will not offer this cover at all - National Westminster, Halifax and Nationwide Life being three of these.

If your insurers do cover your children within your policy, they will automatically cover all of them, so once the policy is in force there is no need to inform the insurer of the addition/s to your family. Similarly when you start your family the child will be automatically included when he or she reaches the specified age.

Assuming you are covered, the way critical illness cover works for your child is that a tax free lump sum will be paid out if your child is diagnosed with a really serious illness. This will need to be one included in the policy schedule. There is a proviso that the child survives at least 4 weeks from the date of the illness being diagnosed.

The usual payment is a proportion of the total insured value. If the insured total value is say £25,000, then Norwich Union, for instance, would pay out half of the insured sum or £10,000, whichever is the lower amount. They include step-children and make no distinction for adopted children. Standard Life and Legal and General are more generous, paying out up to 50%, but with a maximum payout of £25,000. Legal and General are somewhere in between, at £15,000.

There is a difference in the way the insurance operates when it comes to children. In the case of the main policyholder making a critical illness claim, the policy would pay out and would then be terminated. It would not be possible to make a second claim. Should there be a claim for a child, however, the cover will continue and the claim will have no effect on the policy of the main policyholder.

There are lots of advertisements via the internet for Critical Illness Insurance but because of the great variation in criteria it’s so easy to get it wrong. You’re not dealing with standard insurance and if you make the decision on cost alone, you may not be getting the cover which is right for you and your family. If you look at the insurer’s websites they will just offer their own policies so you’re not receiving comparative quotes. It’s probably unlikely that you’ll get and discount from any of the High Street Brokers. So where do you go?

The best answer will be to use a specialist critical illness broker. They’ll offer a comprehensive service, search for, and find the right policy for you and offer a discount too. You’ll find them on the internet if you look for “Critical illness insurance”.

It’s worth it for your peace of mind.
